The Haunting of Hill House is the latest anthology series to hit Netflix, and like American Horror Story, every season will focus on new supernatural events with different casts and characters. It tells the story of a group of siblings reunited by a family tragedy and forced to face the horrifying house they inhabited as children – as well as its demons. This binge worthy show is not only amazing on the horror side, it's also a psychological tale about family and grief that will stick with you for time. This British blend of comedy and drama follows the teenage students at a fictional secondary school (that's high school for American audiences) as they deal with issues in their personal lives often tied to their awakening sexuality.
Asa Butterfield plays the shy, insecure Otis Milburn, who looks at sex a bit differently from his classmates thanks to his frank, oversharing mother, a sex therapist portrayed byThe X-Files star Gillian Anderson. Set in the city of Derry, Northern Ireland, Derry Girls follows Catholic secondary school student Erin Quinn and her small group of oddball, kooky and, frankly, sweary friends as they navigate teenage life during the Troubles of the 1990s. In between the political turbulence of the period, Quinn and her friends juggle love lives, school exams and family life in, let's just say, very creative ways. Creator Lisa McGee, from Derry herself, brings forth the quirks, conversations and traditions of Irish families in this period in a very deliberate way, and it makes for an incredibly authentic and hilarious watch. Only series 1 of this award-winning comedy is currently available on Netflix UK but even if you can't binge it, every episode is such a gem in its own right that it takes minutes to fall head over heels for the Derry girls. Now in its fifth season, now is the perfect time to get into one of best things on Netflix ever.
Back in the 1990s BoJack Horseman was the star of a hit TV sitcom. The animated series picks up with BoJack 20 years after his peak as he sinks deeper into middle age and an endless cycle of substance abuse. In a LA half-populated by human-animal hybrids, BoJack comes to terms with his existential dread in this bleak and darkly funny comedy. The first half of season one is a little heavy on the bleakness and light on laughs, but once it hits its stride this surreal comedy comes into its own with stellar voice performances from Amy Sedaris, Will Arnett and Aaron Paul.Watch it here.
The Sinner was USA's breakout hit in the summer of 2017, and it's obvious to see why. The show is gorgeous to look at, with excellent cinematography and shot composition, the acting is phenomenal, and considering the show is an anthology series, each season both past and current will always tell a complete story from beginning to end. InThe Sinner's first season, a woman admits to fatally stabbing a man at the beach, but she has no memory of why she may have performed such a crime.
With a cast including Jessica Biel, Bill Pullman , and Christopher Abbott, The Sinner is perfect for anyone who enjoys anthology series and crime dramas. What started off as an unassuming, if not charming, sitcom following the life of Jess Day has evolved into one of the best comedies on television. While no one would ever callNew Girl an innovative television show, it is one of the best hangout shows on the air today, featuring a fantastic cast and some hilarious writing.
Zooey Deschanel stars as Jess Day, an outgoing, energetic, offbeat teacher who catches her boyfriend cheating on her in the pilot of the show. At this point,Grey's Anatomy has almost become the ultimate binge experience. The show takes place at fictional Seattle Grace Hospital, following the life and career of Meredith Grey from her time at the hospital as an intern, who eventually becomes a resident and rises through the ranks through the hospital. The show is filled with with drama, crushing life choices, and dozens of characters who come and go.Grey'sisn't a perfect show, occasionally diving a bit too-much into saccharine plotlines and a lot of character deaths.
But the show is well made, with great performances from nearly every actor. Plenty of the cast has gone onto bigger and better things after leaving Seattle Grace, and Shonda Rhimes, the creator and showrunner, has found massive success following the creation ofGrey's Anatomy. Overall, it may not be a show for everyone, but it's probably the binge-iest show on the platform today.
Keir Gilchrist portrays autistic teenager Sam Gardner in this Netflix original series that follows Sam's journey through high school and — in later seasons — college, navigating the complicated social situations he's presented with at school and home. After a shaky first season, Atypical found its groove in its second season and followed that up with a third, critically acclaimed season that saw Sam begin college and deal with an entirely new set of challenges. Jennifer Jason Leigh and Michael Rapaport play Sam's mother and father, respectively, while Brigette Lundy-Paine plays Sam's talented and protective sister. The series wrapped up with its fourth and final season, and all four seasons are now available on Netflix.
Based on the Archie comic book series, and less so on the 90s TV show Sabrina The Teenage Witch, this Netflix Originals series may look like a kids show, but it's got all the right ingredients to make it a dark and compelling binge watch for all ages. It follows the story of Sabrina Spellman, a half-witch, half-human, who feels like she doesn't quite fit into the devil-worshipping world of her coven or the local high school for humans either. The first season is entertaining, but it isn't until the recently-released second season that it gets much more unsettling and addictive. Executive-produced by Brad Falchuk and Ryan Murphy and developed by Scott Alexander and Larry Karaszewski,American Crime Story is another anthology series airing on FX, telling stories based on true events throughout recent history.
SubtitledThe People v. OJ Simpson, the first season ofACS tells the story of the murder of Simpson's wife, Nicole Brown Simpson, and the subsequent murder trial against Simpson himself. The second season,The Assassination of Gianni Versace, is also streaming. A show inspired by the true story of the first pro female wrestling syndicate in the '80s? GLOW's purely fun comedy, packed with eccentric female characters, teams campiness with underdog triumph and soars.
Season 3 progresses deeper into the lives of its diverse ensemble, shifting the series to Las Vegas. A fourth and final season was in the works, but sadly production fell victim to the pandemic and Netflix cancelled the show. Plus,Gillian Andersonco-stars as Otis' eccentric divorcée mom, who is an actual sex therapist and has a house full of phallic statues, which is just a lot of fun. Even Netflix couldn't have predicted that the final season of Schitt's Creek would sweep the Emmy Awards for comedy in 2020. But this little Canadian comedy has turned into a TV powerhouse, thanks in part to Netflix itself. The father-and-son duo of Eugene and Dan Levy created and starred in Schitt's Creek for six seasons.
The show follows the formerly wealthy Rose family after they lose their fortune and circumstances force them to move to a small town they once purchased as a joke. But this is a comedy that has a lot of heart to go with its side-splitting moments and unique characters. The final episode even nailed the landing for the series, which is always a rarity. This month, Netflix is adding the sixth season, which completes the show's run. If you want to watch something light and fun at the moment we don't blame you. That's why it's perfect timing that all six seasons of laugh-out-loud comedy series Community have landed on Netflix.
You'll recognise most of the cast as they're all great comedy actors, including Donald Glover and Alison Brie. The show is about life at a community college in the fictional town of Greendale, Colorado. Before Dan Harmon went on to co-createRick and Morty, he worked for five seasons onCommunity at NBC. And while his most recent creative efforts have been one of Adult Swim's most popular shows to date,Community—as critically-acclaimed as it is—continues to remain a cult hit. That might finally change with all six seasons of Community now streaming on Netflix. The show follows Jeff Winger , a disgraced lawyer who returns to community college to actually finish his degree.
There he meets a lovable gang of misfits , who slowly become the family he never had. The show serves as a prequel to and a reimagining ofPsycho, the 1960 Hitchcock classic that remains a horror staple nearly sixty years after its release. Developed by Carlton Cuse , Kerry Ehrin , and Anthony Cipriano, the show stars Freddie Highmore as a young Norman Bates, and Vera Farmiga as his mother Norma, who purchase a motel following the death of Norman's father. After an assault leads to Norman murdering a man in defense of his mother, the cover-up leads suspicion and conspiracy to the town of White Pine Bay.
As the show continued, it gained critical acclaim for the acting from both leads and for its twists and turns through storytelling. Perhaps appropriate for a series with the word "Fire" in the title,Halt and Catch Fire is a slow-burn series, one that starts slow but ramps up as the series continues down its four full seasons. A period drama set in the 1980s and 1990s,Halt and Catch Fire follows a fictionalized account of the computer revolution at the end o the 20th century. The first two seasons are set in the Silicon Prairie in Dallas-Fort Worth, while the third and final season move to Silicon Valley. Lee Pace stars as Joe MacMillan, a technology entrepreneur and former IBM employee who joins Cardiff Electric at the start of the show. Scoot McNairy and Mackenzie Davis also star as Gordon Clark and Cameron Howe, respectively, and Davis in particular has been critically-acclaimed for her performance.
Adapted from the manga of the same name,Attack on Titanis one of the most popular anime series to premiere this decade, attracting fans and newcomers to the genre alike. The series is set in an alternate reality from our own, where humanity has taken refuge within cities protected by giant walls. Outside the city are the Titans, giant humanoid beings that eat humans without care or reason.
When his mother falls victim to a Titan, Eren and his friends join the Scout Regiment, the soldiers who dedicate their lives to fighting the Titans once and for all. Three seasons of the anime have premiered, though only season one is on the service as of writing. When first announced, The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina made many frown, having including more an atmosphere of a horror movie than that of the Sabrina sitcom of our childhoods. But this teen show didn't claim to be a reboot of the Teenage Witch humorous series. Instead, it awesomely draws inspiration directly from the comic books, which tell the story of a half-witch who must choose between a peaceful human life and a thrilling destiny as a witch.
The tone is sombre and the aesthetics are too, making it a perfect show to binge through on Halloween. However, Cursed isn't the only exciting bit of Netflix content to debut this week. Instead — like last week — the streaming service is a veritable smorgasbord of bingeable TV shows and movies. Earlier this week, Netflix unleashed Fatal Affair, a madcap stalker thriller starring Nia Long and Omar Epps. Then there are two compelling reality shows , one fascinating true crime docuseries , and even a foreign language cheating drama to compliment Fatal Affair (Mexico's Dark Desire). For sexy teen show lovers, Netflix premiered Brazilian YA series and Euphoria soul sibling The Kissing Game today.
As Netflix's horny and heartfelt teen dramedy returns for season 3, it's a good time to school yourself on Sex Education. Asa Butterfield stars as Otis, an insecure high schooler whose sexpertise — drawn from his sex-therapist mother Jean — gives him unexpected social capital among his classmates. Soon, he's dispensing advice with a makeshift sex-therapy clinic at school, alongside misunderstood bad girl Maeve . Come for the raunchy premise, stay for the empathetic story lines and winning cast, including Ncuti Gatwa as Otis' gay best friend who defies "gay best friend" tropes. Dear White People expands creator Justin Simien's 2014 indie film into an incisive, insightful series that plumbs complex issues of race and culture with wit and verve. Set at a fictional Ivy League school, the show centers around Samantha White , who launches a combative radio program to enlighten the white folks on campus.
Meanwhile, the rich ensemble of characters around her lets the show explore various perspectives and personal and political issues. Smart, satirical, and timely, Dear White People is an ideal binge right now — and it's the perfect time to catch up before the fourth and final season arrives. BBC Two's Giri / Haji, available in the U.S. via Netflix, is already one of the year's best surprises.
The international thriller starts when a Tokyo detective, Kenzo Mori , is tasked by a prominent Yakuza crime family—in conjunction with the police force—to secretly go to London in search of his brother Yuto , who he thought died a year ago. The hope is that bringing Yuto back will stop a sprawling war that he helped kickstart among the Yakuza factions. But like Kenzo's investigation into Yuto's disappearance and faked death, Giri /Haji is full of unexpected twists, not just in its narrative but in its form. It's dark and violent at times, but also funny and full of heart. At the center of the story is the tale of two brothers, yet it's also about forged family and discovering the truth about one's self. The gang war is the framework for the story, which plays out in many ways like Lock, Stock, and Two Smoking Barrels ; and yet, one of its most moving scenes takes place during a quiet, makeshift Yom Kippur dinner regarding atonement.
A heartfelt (and now Emmy-winning) riches-to-rags story, this comedy follows the Rose family as they're forced out of their lives of the rich and famous and into a middle-of-nowhere town filled with unusual characters. They try to rebuild their old lives and find themselves building new ones instead. Schitt's Creek made history in 2020 by sweeping comedy categories at the Emmys, and the final season launched on Netflix last year. If you haven't watched this wonderfully funny show yet, now is the time.
Looks like the trending hashtag #SaveManifest worked, because Netflix recently renewed the hit NBC mystery series for a fourth and final season. The story, which follows a group of passengers on a flight missing for five years that suddenly reappears, has made a huge splash on social media and sailed high in the Top 10 on Netflix for several weeks. A lot can happen in five years, which means most of their spouses have moved on, kids have grown up, and parents have passed away, making their return to society more unimaginably difficult.
To make matters worse, the passengers begin to experience voices and visions representing events yet to occur, sending them down a bumpy moral road that they can only navigate together. On Wednesday came the fourth and final season of Dear White People. If you haven't seen this show, it's a critically-acclaimed comedy drama that follows several black college students at an Ivy League institution. Paul Sun-Hyung Lee and Jean Yoon play the family's father and mother, respectively, while Andrea Ban plays their live-in daughter and Simu Liu plays their estranged son. Heartwarming, hilarious, and surprisingly poignant at times, the series is an ode to the importance of family — both the families we're born into and the ones we create for ourselves. The series wrapped up its saga with its sixth and final season. Adult CG animated anthology Love, Death and Robots just returned for its second, shorter season of episodes. Like all anthologies, the quality varies between episodes, but taken as a larger work, this show has a lot to give. The first half of season one is a little heavy on the bleakness and light on laughs, but once it hits its stride this surreal comedy comes into its own with stellar voice performances from Amy Sedaris, Will Arnett and Aaron Paul.
