One of the few unique things about Over the Hedge is the fact that, even when you're playing by yourself, there's always an artificial intelligence-controlled companion animal to back you up, and you can switch between the two of them on the fly. It ends up being kind of a so-what feature, since there's little appreciable performance difference between any of the characters, and you rarely even find obstacles that require cooperation to overcome. We ended up playing as Verne the turtle most of the time, just because we liked his double-jump animation better. If you're sitting on your partner's shoulders, you can also perform a useful spin attack by simultaneously pressing Y. As a major motion picture, Over the Hedge tells the story of a group of woodland creatures coping with the arrival of Suburbia, presumably with hilarious and perhaps occasionally thought-provoking results. The game hints at some of the conflict from the film, specifically with an overzealous exterminator and a dark-hearted bear named Vincent.
We have to assume that the film also paints the suburbs as more aggressively antagonistic, because mostly what we got from the game is that woodland animals are a bunch of jerks that sneak into your house, maliciously bust everything up, and then steal your TV. By unlocking and completing puzzles and mini-games such as "Golf Cart Derby," "RC Car Racing," and "Suburban Mini Golf," players earn energy-filled snacks or powered-up weapons, sure to have the virtual residents saying, "there goes the neighborhood." The game allows a second player to press a button on the second controller and join the game at any time, as well as pause the game and drop out.
There are also plenty of obstacles and hazards to overcome, as well as objectives to complete and extras to collect. The game also has an array of hats, which when collected make a humorous sound and act as armor. These include a chef hat, a crown, a witch hat and a hockey helmet amongst others. There are better options out there for the youngsters, such as Kao The Kangaroo, but the variety of moves, use of character likeness from the film, mini-games and overall presentation will surely please any little one or fan of the flick.
If you're part of the older audience just looking for a good platform game then Over The Hedge is far from the best, but then again it isn't trying to be the absolute be-all-end-all platform action game. It sets out to create an entertaining game that compliments the film whilst keeping the attention of youngsters and in that respect it does phenomenally. While playing, you can use weapons such as golf clubs, plungers, baseball bats, etc. to fight enemies.
You can also throw long range weapons, such as frisbees or boomerangs. There are various toy guns thrown about the game as well, like a ball launcher. The developers made the environments destructible which adds even more fun to this title. Where this game truly shines however is when you're playing with a friend, then it's a total blast to play. Unfortunately the game is marred by a camera that is troublesome at times and sometimes it can get repetitive.
But as a whole, this game is a great buy for kids and even for hardened gamers. Merely 'doing the job' might offend the proud sensibilities of the gaming purist, but Over The Hedge is quite obviously a decent attempt to make the most of the license, and isn't the bloodless exercise that we feared it would be. Unlike most video games based on movies, this one starts at the climax of the film, with RJ having his change of heart and the animals defeating Gladys, Vincent, and Dwayne, leaving the forest animals free to do as they please. These sorts of challenges might sound kind of rad on paper, but the mostly one-button combat and the high-volume/low-variety ratio of enemies pretty much puts the kibosh on much of the game's fun. These moments are few, though, and never present a real challenge. Several locations from the movie appear to give a greater playing ground than the suburbs, the home base being the woods where all the loot is stored. Players can switch around between the four characters to give the storyline some slight twist, as each character says something different when a situation arises, to slightly alter the story.
Some stages will mix up the formula a bit by adding different gameplay elements. A couple areas will feature the protagonists being pursued by something and all you really have to do is move left and right and jump over obstacles. It's actually a lot like those old Crash Bandicoot levels where you're avoiding the boulder. Another stage requires you to protect a wagon full of stolen food.
When you approach security-laden portions of levels, a little minigame pops up that plays like whack-a-mole. These aren't particularly thrilling areas, but it does serve to break up the formula at the very least. On top of that, there are three unlockable minigames that serve as a decent distraction from the main story. In the game's final stages, however, the story shifts as the animals find that Dwayne has kidnapped Heather, and this leads to a showdown with Dwayne himself in the heart of VermTech headquarters.
This final battle ends with the animals destroying the capping controller, freeing all the brainwashed animals from Dwayne's control. If you have a child that enjoyed the film you may want to consider picking this one up. The characters are cute and the gameplay is very accessible, which are key components in a kid's game. I wouldn't expect it to last them incredibly long because it does get tiring very quickly. Over the Hedge is definitely a better than average children's movie to game endeavor. It at least deserves a rental unless the gamer in question absolutely loved the flick.
